Is there a way to find out why or what helicopter is circling a specific area? I can't find anything via Google at the moment. I'm wondering if there's a site that shows all air traffic of helicopters up in the air, specifically per locale - be it military, police, news, etc. FYI: I'm not too far from National Airport and there's been a helicopter circling in a wide berths for almost 45 minutes now and just really curious what's up. Thanks much! Maybe a police helicopter. Could have been a robbery in the area. Someone knocked over the 7-eleven. Don't know of a way to find out where the helicopter was coming from but could it been a TV news chopper?? Washington channels 4,5,7 and 9 and channels 2 and 45 from Baltimore all share the same helicopter now. Baltimore's 45 and DC's channel 7 are now under the same ownership, have no idea why Baltimore's channel 2 would share such a thing with the DC stations though other than just to say that they have a helicopter and to save money plus that city's channels 11 and 13 each have their own helicopter so they probably would not want to share it with a competitor. Unfortunately due to the sharing there would not be a logo on the chopper to say which station the chopper is from. Usually out here when a chopper is circling around it usually means that there is either a fire, robbery or a traffic accident somewhere in the area. Last edited by tantan; at PM. There are police scanner apps that may help. They take a while to get the hang of understanding the jargon though. Location: In the land beyond Ohare! Pilot training, security, military, TV-Radio traffic reports, who knows, it could be anything. Certainly in this area it shouldnt be seen as unusual. A scanner that receives the Air Band mhz may offer a clue. Old Guard.

Notice any planes circling above your neighborhood lately? The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that the FBI has been flying surveillance planes, registered to fake companies, over several U. In one month-long period, the AP said, the federal agency sent planes carrying surveillance devices across 11 states, covering 30 urban areas. The agency stressed that the planes were part of ongoing investigations, rather than mass surveillance operations. Over the past decade here have been at least planes—and they look alarming. The AP describes :. Details confirmed by the FBI track closely with published reports since at least that a government surveillance program might be behind suspicious-looking planes slowly circling neighborhoods… one of the planes, photographed in flight last week by the AP in northern Virginia, bristled with unusual antennas under its fuselage and a camera on its left side. The planes can capture video of unrelated criminal activity on the ground that could be handed over for prosecutions… Some of the aircraft can also be equipped with technology that can identify thousands of people below through the cellphones they carry, even if they're not making a call or in public. To operate these mystery planes, the FBI created fake companiesmany of which are associated with a man referred to as Robert Lindley. NG Research was linked to one of the planes seen circling above Baltimore last month, and which the Washington Post reported as part of an effort by local and federal officials to keep an eye on Baltimore during riots following the death of Freddie Gray. Why is there helicopters flying around right now

For the past year, a common occurrence around my area has been helicopters flying in circles at night. I haven't watched them, but I know they're circling because of the sound. It's always late at night around the same times, and it really pisses me off. I can understand if it's something important, yet it always seems to be in the same place, and to be frank, the police don't really do much around here. I live about 5 minutes away from the Thames on foot, yet 30 away from London by car. I'm not living in a great area, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's criminal tracking or such. Depends on where you live. Do you live in a high crime area, near Washington DC, near a military base, a hospital, a heliport? There could be several reasons. And you may just not notice them flying until late night when you are trying to sleep. I would be used to it already after an entire year. Try your best to ignore it. Or can't you call somebody and complain that the helicopters are keeping you up and you're losing sleep. I'm just curious, really. These buggers come round and either keep me awake, or wake me up. Update: I live about 5 minutes away from the Thames on foot, yet 30 away from London by car. Answer Save. Zaphod Beeblebrox Lv 7. You have a right to know what police helicopters are doing in your neighborhood. Finding out is relatively straightforward, since serious police incidents such as missing child or major highway accident will usually be in the news. You can also call the police directly. Law enforcement may not be able to tell you everything about the incident, but they can usually give you a good idea about what is going on. Police incident reports are generally public record, but the way a police department disseminates public information varies from state to state and even by department. Most information needs to be approved by a supervisor before it's released, and if the helicopter search was part of an ongoing investigation, police may not release the information immediately. Call and ask — but don't call since that's strictly for emergencies. Most police departments have a nonemergency phone number posted on their website. An Internet quick search should get you the number. Once you're connected, ask to speak to the chief or the sergeant on duty. Identify yourself as a member of the public who has a question about an incident near your home. After regular hours and on weekends, most police departments will automatically transfer your call to a radio room or switchboard. You may have to leave a message and wait to be called back. A good way to find out what the police are doing in your neighborhood is to call a newsroom. Every newspaper and television station has at least one staffer monitoring police scanners. If the cops have called in the choppers, it's likely an incident that reporters have been monitoring. If not, they'll be interested and will probably thank you for cluing them in to a big story. Find the phone number for the newsroom on the Internet or on the inside front page of the newspaper and ask for a police reporter or the city desk. If you don't get your question answered promptly, ask for an editor. Mark Pernice for BuzzFeed News. Each weekday, dozens of U. At least a few planes have carried devices that can track the cell phones of people below. Day after day, dozens of these planes circled above cities across the nation. The FBI said that its planes are only used to target suspects in specific investigations of serious crimes, pointing to a statement issued in Juneafter reporters and lawmakers started asking questions about FBI surveillance flights. But most of these government planes took the weekends off. The BuzzFeed News analysis also revealed how the government responded to the mass shooting last December in San Bernardino, California. In the weeks leading up to the deadliest terrorist attack on U. That changed abruptly after the attack on the morning of Dec. And starting Dec. Three different FBI planes flew around the mosque, some circling for more than three hours at a time. There were flights on each day in the week after the attack — except for Saturday and Sunday. The FBI told BuzzFeed News that it cannot launch investigations based on race, ethnicity, or religion — surveillance means that individual criminal suspects are being watched, not groups of people. In the San Francisco Bay Area, for instance, there was a clear circle above Little Kabul in Fremont, home to the largest concentration of ethnic Afghans in the nation. The main concentrations of surveillance in Minneapolis, meanwhile, were above an area known as Little Mogadishu for its large Somali population. But these neighborhoods did not come under heightened aerial scrutiny after the terrorist mayhem in Paris on Nov. And on Thanksgiving Day, less than two weeks after the Paris attacks, with the nation under a State Department—issued global terrorism alert, federal surveillance planes almost entirely stopped flying, only to resume once the holiday was over. The BuzzFeed News analysis almost certainly underestimates the scope of surveillance by federal aircraft. Some two dozen planes operated by the FBI and more than registered to the DHS never appeared on Flightradar24, suggesting that some surveillance planes may be hidden from public view on plane-tracking websites. See here for details on the BuzzFeed News analysis. FBI planes have also on occasion been used to support local law enforcement. Responding to the BuzzFeed News analysis, FBI spokesman Christopher Allen said that planes may circle over cities while waiting for a suspect to emerge from a building. In some cases, the BuzzFeed News analysis showed that FBI aircraft indeed seemed to be following a vehicle from place to place, pausing to circle at each stop. Other flights, however, circled a single location for several hours, and then returned to their airfields. The targets of surveillance may simply be less active on the weekends, he said. He suspects that the weekend dip reflects the controversial practice of using undercover agents and informants to entice suspects into joining fake terrorist plots devised by the FBI. In June of last year, the Associated Press reported that it had linked more than 50 planes, mostly small Cessna Skylane aircraft, to 13 fake companies created as fronts for the FBI. Also using Flightradar24, AP reporters tracked more than flights in 11 states over the course of a month. We then looked for planes registered to these front companies in data provided by Flightradar We detected nearly FBI fixed-wing planes, mostly small Cessnas, plus about a dozen helicopters. Collectively, they made more than 1, flights over our four-month-plus observation period. The aircraft frequently circled or hovered around specific locations, often for several hours in the daytime over urban areas. We also tracked more than 90 aircraft, about two-thirds of them helicopters, that were registered to the DHS, which is responsible for border protection, customs, and immigration. Not surprisingly, these planes were especially active around border towns such as McAllen, Texas, which faces the Mexican city of Reynosa across the Rio Grande. The DHS would not comment on flights over specific cities, but confirmed that its planes regularly support other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI. DHS spokesman Carlos Lazo told BuzzFeed News by email that its planes are mainly used to combat the illegal drug trade, human traffickingand violent crime. Many FBI Cessnas, for example, are fitted with exhaust mufflers to reduce engine noise. FBI and DHS aircraft carry sophisticated camera systems in steerable mounts that can provide conventional video, night vision, and infrared thermal imaging. On FBI planes, cameras are typically paired with augmented reality systemswhich superimpose a variety of information over the video, and can embed the feed from a camera into a wider scene built up from stored satellite images. This promotional video from Churchill Navigation of Boulder, Colorado, whose systems are installed on FBI surveillance aircraft, explains some of their capabilities.

Hearing the roar of a police helicopter flying over your home can be unnerving. Has there been a serious car accident, a lost child, or are police chasing a suspect? Why is there a helicopter flying over me right now

Hi all. Last night i was woken at about am by a helicopter flying over the house it kept flying back and forth over and over till about am. I remember as a kid, the Police had Dope detection equipment fitted to chopppers, and would regularly hover over properties in Wamboin for hours on end at night. Someone could have been spinning us kids a Furphy back then, but maybe it was true, and the LCD detectors are now being used, judging by the types of drop kicks that hang around Lanyon Valley. It was flying quite high over the Kambah area when I peered out the window to see where it was about 1am-ish. It did a few passes lasting about 10mins then disappeared. It was nothing much, just a patrol from 8th RAR calling in helicopter gunships and a dust off, after being ambushed by a superior force of VC from D Battalion on the outskirts of Gordon at dusk. Heard it 7 times over Lanyon, between and 2am. Strange things is would always pass south over the east side of the valley and then north over the west side so it was hardly random. Nothing to see here… Move along people, oiy you with the camera phone give that here! And heard the helicopter for hours on end… I had a look and thought maybe they had a spotlight out looking for someone but it just seemed to be hovering around. My first thought was southcare, until the noise returned several times, and my thoughts turned to that. A friend who used to live on a cattle farm told me of police doing low-flying passes with FLIR-style sensors, which would spook the cattle. Even after numerous complaints, they still persist in their search, day or night. Heard it in Banks as well. My sister saw police with sniffer dogs out in Gordon as well around 1. Do you know if that was in Mackney Place Gordon as well with the police and sniffer dogs. I looked out the window around that time and saw two people with flouro vests on and torches but thought they were checking out a blocked drain. I definitely heard the helicopter and saw it circling around. Must have been something bad for all the commotion! It was over the inner north around midnight. It was a loud one. Why are there so many helicopters flying around today 2020

Why is that LAPD helicopter circling incessantly over your house in the middle of the night? Some folks, reasonably enough, get worried that a serial killer is lurking in their backyard. Others are simply annoyed by the noise and just want to get some sleep. And while this won't help your copter-induced insomnia, it might satisfy your curiosity. He was kind enough to give up the top five reasons why an LAPD helicopter is circling overhead: ]. The division, a pioneer in aerial policing, was born inalthough it was in that the division expanded into the kind of atmospheric policing we see today. LAPD even had an airplane in its fleet. Other departments took notice of the pioneering program, while also taking advantage of low-cost military-surplus aircraft to build up their own air divisions. With 17 choppers, LAPD's helicopter division remains the nation's largest such operation, and its Hooper Heliport downtown is the America's largest rooftop heliport. On Friday and Saturday nights, that increases to one in the Valley, one north of the 10 freeway, and one south of the 10 freeway, he says. The elemental answer to the question in the headline is that L. Helicopters are essential to helping the department respond to crime in roughly square miles of municipal turf. The department's main air ride, the American Eurocopter AS B2, can travel up to miles per hour. Air units are often first on the scene of major emergencies. Your complaints aren't being ignored, but the department thinks that catching bad guys is more important than your aural comfort. You're going to upset neighbors if it's 2 or 3 in the morning. Our phone line here will ring. We don't enjoy it. It's our job. They will get out of there as soon as they can. Here's a list of reasons why that LAPD chopper is overhead: [ 5. Traffic stops. If there's nothing else more pressing going on, LAPD air units will circle over traffic stops, particularly if they involve wanted or allegedly armed-and-dangerous suspects. low flying helicopter over my house
